About Counselling

What is counselling?
Counselling is a form of talking therapy, wherein a counsellor provides a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space in which you can talk through your thoughts, feelings and concerns. Counselling deals the whole person, rather than just the presenting issue, and your counsellor will work with you to support your mental health needs, allowing healing to take place.

What to expect
You can expect a respectful, open and genuine person to provide a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space for your sessions. Your counsellor will not give advice, direction or solutions to problems or issues, but will help you gain insight and new perspectives.
Each session lasts 55 minutes, and counselling session usually take place on a weekly basis. We have male and female counsellors available, and a choice of daytime, evening and weekend appointments. There is no requirement for a minimum or maximum number of sessions.

Confidentiality
Sessions with your counsellor are confidential. However, counsellors are obliged to break confidentiality if you disclose that you intend to harm yourself or another person, or if you reveal current abuse of a minor.

National Low Cost Counselling is a not-for-profit initiative
In today’s society, we all have stresses and crises in our lives that can be alleviated through talking with a trained professional. In the current economic climate, we at National Low Cost Counselling are aiming to make that a possibility for more people. People come to counselling for many reasons. These vary from issues around their quality of life to relationship difficulties. We are experienced in dealing with such varied topics as loss and bereavement, depression, anxiety, stress, anger, personal development, self esteem, sexual/sexuality issues to name but a few.

What benefits can be expected?
Counselling is for anyone who wants support, perhaps at a time of crisis or otherwise, who is unhappy with his or her present circumstances and hopes for change, or who wishes to make progress in personal development. It is a valuable aid to personal growth and can help one to develop assertiveness and self-confidence, and improve your sense of well being. It is of particular relevance in times of transition.

The most important aspect of any therapy is the relationship between client and therapist, so to an extent, a client may build a trusting and safe relationship with a student counsellor and make good progress with that therapist without difficulty.

However, some issues are complex, or deep rooted, and may be beyond the scope of a trainee therapist. A trainee therapist may not have the necessary skills or experience to adequately provide that strong basis of support needed for clients to trust in the relationship, or may not have the necessary specialised training for certain issues, for example abuse, addiction, or eating disorders.

This is no reflection on either the therapist or the client, but rather a simple mis-match between the two. As a client, you should always feel comfortable enough to feed back to your therapist if you think there is something missing, or if the therapist has said or done something that bothers you in any way. A good therapist can take this feedback and work with it, to either change their approach, or refer a client on to someone better qualified to help. In such cases then the trainee therapist may refer you to one of our professional therapists who can continue the work.

National Low Cost Counselling is pleased to be able to offer a reduced cost service to clients on lower incomes or in financial difficulty, and a low cost service to those who are unwaged or on social welfare.
